Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday said that accessibility to quality higher education is a key to achieving economic and social development of the South Asian region.
“Innovative methods like open learning and distance education and quality education through exchange of information among the universities in this region can play an effective role in meeting the regional needs and aspirations,” he said.
The education minister was addressing the concluding session of the two-day first-ever meeting of Saarc education ministers held at the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, according to a Bangladesh High Commission release.
The minister informed the Colombo meeting that the government of Bangladesh has launched ‘Vision 2021’ that calls for establishment of participatory democratic society capable of addressing the needs and aspiration of the 21st century.
He said the multi-stream education system in Bangladesh should be integrated into a single system to make it compatible with the common regional education standard.
Nahid also underscored the need to increase allocation of public funds in order to ensure quality higher education.
